The tradition of carnations as the official flower of Mother’s Day dates back to the holiday’s founder, Anna Jarvis, in the early 20th century. At the first official Mother’s Day service in Grafton, West Virginia, Anna sent 500 white carnations to the church in honour of all mothers, as it was her mother’s favourite flower. She believed carnations symbolised a mother’s pure, unconditional love because the petals do not wither easily, just like a mother’s devotion.
